Meet one of the newest additions to the Idea Kraft team, Owen Holland. Read on to learn more about him, his background and his love for TikTok.
You’re Idea Kraft’s digital marketing specialist! What does that mean, and what do you do?
Hi, everyone; I am a digital marketing specialist, which means I have to bring enough coffee for everyone– just kidding! I help create and implement digital assets for projects and clients through graphic design, video editing, copywriting, and social media management.
Favorite part of your job?
I would have to go with the work environment of Idea Kraft. It’s definitely the most positive, creative, supportive, and fun in-office experience I’ve ever had. Every week we always find time to have lunch together, get take out, make coffee runs, go for walks, play games, and even have chocolate taste tests while still getting outstanding work done each day.
What’s one thing that has surprised you in your career path up until now?
Since my experience is concentrated in digital media and social media management, I think that meeting the actual people who run massive business/university social media accounts surprised me quite a bit. Not in a bad way, either, but it’s an exciting change of perception meeting the individuals who maintain standards of quality, giving big accounts a polished, almost institutional feel.
What’s one piece of advice you can offer to someone who wants a job like yours?
You must create content and keep your eyes open for opportunities, but start small. Figure out how your favorite creators take advantage of music, lighting, tripods, editing software, and camera angles, and try them out yourself.
Set goals to go viral on TikTok, enter PSA video contests, and enter short film contests while building up a social media presence, a video portfolio, and familiarity with standard equipment. If you keep yourself busy, an opportunity for someone of your skillset will present itself, which is your foot in the door.
After winning my first two PSA video contests (on drowsy driving) and being a small TikTok creator, I used that experience to pursue running Binghamton University’s TikTok account, which led to working for BU Marketing and Communications, and then Idea Kraft. None of it would have been possible without my self-taught underlying experience.
Guilty Pleasure?
After a long day of classes, work, going to the gym, and cooking dinner, I like nothing more than finishing out the day playing a few rounds of Hearthstone Battlegrounds before bed.
Favorite social platform?
Definitely TikTok, and before you cringe, hear me out. I’ve seen some of the funniest and most creative videos of all time on TikTok, made by regular kids my age, getting praised and enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. That, to me, is a beautiful thing.
Favorite accounts to follow?
On TikTok? I would have to go with @BinghamtonU, @Duolingo, and @Timmchiusano.
